2019 Military Service Exemption Position Available at the IBS CMCM (Synthetic Organic/Polymer Chemistry OR Theoretical Study of Carbon and Related Materials)
The IBS Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials (CMCM) at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) is seeking a synthetic chemist OR theoretician who wishes to apply for a Military Service Exemption Position.
As a Synthetic Organic/Polymer Chemist working in the CMCM, you will apply synthetic chemistry knowledge to solve challenges that pertain to the preparation, identification, and purification of interesting small molecules and polymers. The position is part of a larger program aimed at novel carbon-containing materials (https://cmcm.ibs.re.kr/).
Duties of the position include:
(1) Planning and performing chemical reactions, including those that require inert atmospheres;
(2) Monitoring chemical reactions using chromatographic or spectroscopic techniques;
(3) Purifying compounds using chromatography, crystallization, and other techniques;
(4) Using spectroscopy and other analytical (NMR, IR, UV-vis, mass, etc.) to determine the structures and purities of new compounds and materials;
(5) Communicating research activities through notebook updates, written reports, and periodic oral presentations;
(6) Searching the chemical literature;
(7) Practicing safety standards and protocols;
(8) Knowledge of X-ray crystallography techniques and/or polymer synthesis & characterization may be helpful but not required.
To be successful, the following are required:
• A Master of Science (M.S.) or higher (e.g., Ph.D.) degree in chemistry, polymer science, or chemical engineering;
• Experience in synthetic chemistry techniques and a solid theoretical knowledge of organic chemistry;
• Experience in chromatography and other purification techniques; and
• Experience in interpreting spectroscopic data to evaluate new organic compounds.
As a theoretician working in the CMCM, you will be responsible for one or more research projects that are carried in the Theory Group of the CMCM:
• Multi-scale computational methods development for materials science
• Application of machine learning in materials science
• Delving into the mechanisms of the growth and etching of materials
• Studying the structural defects, and the mechanical, thermal, and electronic properties of CNTs, graphene and 2D materials.
The position is part of a larger program aimed at novel carbon-containing materials (https://cmcm.ibs.re.kr/).
To be successful, the following are required:
• A Master of Science (M.S.) or higher (e.g., Ph.D.) degree in physics, chemistry, materials science;
• Experience in developing computational methods and/or using them for the study of materials;
• Strong familiarity with at least one programming language, such as Fortran, C/C++, Python, …;
Experience(s) in managing high performance computational (HPC) system(s) is a strong priority.
The salary and start date of the position are negotiable.
