Since its opening in 2009, UNIST has truly become one of world’s leading science and technology universities, despite being younger than its peers. UNIST has captured the attention of scientists worldwide with its potential to become one of the world’s top 10 science and technology universities by 2030. On June, 2014 UNIST became one of the top four national universities after the careful systematic evaluation of scientific research, offered by “Nature Publishing Group”, one of the world’s most prestigious science journals. Moreover, 20 graduate students from the Biomedical Engineering department have been selected as the recipients of the Global PhD Fellowship Award from the Korean Government, thereby taking the top spot in the list of top universities in South Korea.
UNIST has been designated as an “Institute for Basic Science” and has hosted three IBS campus site labs, led by world-renowned scientists. These research centers will be receiving funding of 300 billion (KRW) over the next 10 years from Korea Institute for Basic Science.

Together with Konstantin Novoselov, the 2010 Nobel laureate in Physics and a chair-professor of Life Sciences, UNIST has developed an innovative technology where one can mass-produce high-quality graphene that is eco-friendly at the same time.
UNIST Research Center, together with its world class faculty, plans to contribute to the development of local industry and economy through transferring the research experience, knowledge, and technology of its scientists.
UNIST is the type of a place where big breakthroughs in science can happen. This can be achieved through the education of exceptional students and by focusing on advanced and interdisciplinary research. Indeed, many of UNIST’s students’ research findings have had the prestige of appearing in the major journals, like “Angewandte Chemie” and “Advanced Materials”.
