Parental leave system
Parental leave is a system that both female and male faculty members who have a child age 8 or younger (2nd grade of elementary school) may equally use. They can actively participate in parenting during the leave period, build emotional stability between parents and children, and form a bonding relationship. In particular, paternity leave enables fathers to jointly experience the challenges of having a newborn and thus strengthens their family relationship. Fathers are encouraged to share in household and parenting duties even after returning to work.-

2. Applicable to an employee who has children under the age of 8 or below grade 2.
- ※ Parental leave may be granted even before childbirth if there is a diagnosis from a medical institution that absolute stability is required to prevent miscarriage or stillbirth due to experience in miscarriage or stillbirth, old age, etc
3. Significance
- The parental leave shall not apply to a person who has worked less than 6 months prior to the day on which the person intends to commence maternity leave
4. Details
- The maternity leave period shall be within 3 years for one child, which may be used up to 3 times, where extension of leave is considered a separate application.

7. Treatment
- The period of parental leave is included in the length of service, so there is no disadvantage in promotion or severance pay
- ※ For female faculty members
- The total term can be extended for maternity and parental leave after receiving approval from the President.
- The period of both maternity and parental leave is included in the years of service.
- The screening period for tenure appointment is extended for an additional of a maximum 2 years of leave due to a faculty member’s maternity or parental leave.

Q. What is the parental leave period when there are two children?
A. You may use up to three years per child. Therefore, if you have two children, you may use for three years per each, making it up to six years. As this is the right of workers, if both parents are employees of UNIST, the father may use up to three years, and the mother may also use up to three years. However, if they use parental leave for the same period, only one parent is paid the parental leave payment.
Parental leave pay support
The government provides parental leave pay through employment insurance to lessen the burden of income reduction caused by parental leave.-
1. Reference: Article 19 of the Equal Employment Opportunity and Work-family Balance Assistance Act, from Article 70 to Article 74 of the Employment Insurance Act
2. Subject
- Any employee who applies for parental leave of 30 days or more and satisfies all the following requirements:
- ① Employee whose insured unit period is 180 days or more before the start day of parental leave
- ② Employee whose spouse, covered by employment insurance, has not received parental leave of 30 days or more for the same child
- In the case of an uninsured by employment insurance (private school pension holder), UNIST pays an allowance equivalent to the employment insurance.
3. Details
- Eighty percent of usual wages (upper limit KRW 1.5 million per month, lower limit KRW 0.7 million per month) shall be paid for three months from the start date of parental leave and 50% of usual wages (upper limit KRW 1.2 million per month, lower limit KRW 0.7 million per month) shall be paid from the 4th month to the end date.
- Seventy-five percent of parental leave pay shall be paid every month, but the remaining 25% shall be paid six months after returning to work.
- ※ If both parents take parental leave one after another for the same child among employees with employment insurance, three months’ parental leave wages for the second person who used the leave shall be paid at 100% of usual wages (upper limit KRW 2.5 million per month).
- ※ In the case of a single parent using parental leave among employees with employment insurance, 100% of usual wages (upper limit KRW 2.5 million per month) shall be paid for the first three months, 80% of usual wages (upper limit KRW 1.5 million per month) shall be paid from the 4th to 6th month, and 50% of usual wages (upper limit KRW 1.2 million per month) shall be paid from the 7th month to 12th month.
4. How to
- ※ Please apply for parental leave pay support within one month after the parental leave to 12 months after the end date of the parental leave.
- ※ Submit the certificate of the parental leave, application form, and evidential documents for your ordinary wages directly to the employment insurance website (www.ei.go.kr) or the local employment center.

Parenting period working hour reduction system
Parenting period working hour reduction is a system that both female and male faculty members with a child age 8 or younger can equally use. They can have increased parenting time through the working hour reduction system and build emotional stability between parents and children and form a bonding relationship. In addition, as they can continuously work, although working hours are reduced, their competitiveness can be secured due to no career break, and a proper work-life balance is achieved as they have time to care for their home.-
1. Reference: Article 59 of the Rules of Employment
2. Applicable to both female and male faculty members with a child age 8 or younger.
3. This shall not apply in cases where
- the service years of an employee is less than 6 months;
- it is impossible to hire replacement personnel;
- it is determined as an exception by the Enforcement Decree of the Act on Equal Employment for for Both. Sexes/li>
4. Details
- (Use Period) Minimum one month ~ Maximum one year
- ※ As this is used instead of parental leave, the period shall not exceed one year when it is summed up with parental leave days.
- (Reduced hours) Fixed working hours per week after reduction is a minimum of 15 hours and a maximum of 35 hours.
- (Working conditions) The period for which working hours are reduced and the shortened working hours during parenting is determined through an agreement between UNIST and employees, and wages shall be applied in proportion to the working hours. However, disadvantages and degraded working conditions are prohibited.

Nursing time guarantee system
For lactation-stage female employees with a baby of less than one year, nursing time is granted in addition to rest time, twice a day for 30 minutes each time.-

Women’s lounge (lactation room)
A women’s lounge has been installed in easily accessible places to provide female faculty members with appropriate spaces to rest and breastfeed.-

The UNIST daycare center is a workplace nursery that has been operated since September 2013 to provide daycare service for the faculty members’ children. It is a daycare center where children, parents and nursing teachers lead a happy life in open spaces and a natural green environment.-

Children Tuition Support

- Following the regulations on civil servant allowances, etc., civil servant standard allowance is paid to faculty members with children entering high school every year (Ministry of the Interior and Safety).
- ※ However, tuition assistance allowance is not paid for children beneficiaries of free education.
- ※ If a spouse is a civil servant or an employee of a private school, special post office, public institution, and provincial public corporation/industrial complex, for which labor cost is supported by government subsidy or local expense, tuition assistance allowance is not paid in duplicate for the same child.

Childcare Leave

2. Applicable to faculty and staff members with children under high school age
3. Details
- 2 days of childcare leave per year (3 days if there are 3 or more children) is given in case of the following reasons:
- 1) To participate in official events hosted by daycare centers, kindergartens, or schools, or to consult with teachers (evidential documents should be attached such as event guide, confirmation of attendance, etc.).
- 2) To accompany children for hospital treatment (medical certificate should be attached).
