Reduced Working Hours during Childcare System

Reduced Working Hours during Childcare is a system that can be utilized equally by both female and male Faculty & Staff who are parents with children aged 8 or younger.
By Reduced Working Hours during Childcare, you can increase the time available for childcare, find emotional stability with your child, and form an attachment bond .
In addition, since you can continue working even with reduced working hours , you can work without career interruptions, which helps secure your competitiveness and allows you to balance work and family life by providing time to take care of your family.

  • Article 59 of the Employment Rules (Reduced Working Hours during Childcare)
Target
  • Faculty & Staff with children aged 8 or younger or in the second grade of elementary school or lower
exception
  • Cases prescribed by the Enforcement Decree of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act
    • Less than 6 months of continuous service
    • Cases where hiring replacement personnel is impossible
    • If it causes significant disruption to normal business operations

Since it is used in lieu of Parental Leave, the combined period with Parental Leave cannot exceed one year.

Support for Reduced Working Hours during Childcare

To alleviate the burden of income reduction resulting from reduced working hours during the Parental Period, the government provides benefits for Reduced Working Hours during Childcare through employment insurance.

  • Payment of 60% of ordinary wages in proportion to reduced working hours (maximum 1.5 million won, minimum 500,000 won)
  • Calculation method for government subsidies for Reduced Working Hours during Childcare
    = 100% of ordinary wages (maximum 1.5 million KRW, minimum 500,000 KRW) X (5 ÷ standard working hours before reduction) + 80% of ordinary wages (maximum 1.5 million KRW, minimum 500,000 KRW) X ((standard working hours before reduction - standard working hours after reduction - 5) ÷ standard working hours before reduction)
  • For those not enrolled in employment insurance (subscribers to the Private School Teachers' Pension), UNIST and Technology provides allowances equivalent to those for employment insurance.

  • Applications for reduced pay can be made on a monthly basis, starting from one month.

    If applying all at once, apply within 12 months after the end of the Reduced Working Hours during Childcare.

  • Submit the application form for Reduced Working Hours during Childcare, the confirmation form (completed by the employer), and documents verifying ordinary wages to the Employment Insurance website ( www.ei.go.kr ) or the competent regional employment center.
